DYNAMIC DECELERATION TEST OF SCBA LATCH RELEASE SAFETY STRAP ASSEMBLY

This report presents the results of a deceleration test performed on the Apollo Manufacturing SBCA Latch release safety assembly. The tests were requested by Mr. Jay Lippert of Apollo Manufacturing, 900 Colorado Avenue South, Golden Valley MN on February 16, 1999 with the tests completed on July 23, 1999.

The testing was limited to performing the deceleration test to verify integrity of the latch assembly to withstand a G-force (deceleration) of 10 G dynamic deceleration and providing a summary report of the results.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

The safety release assembly Passed the 10-G dynamic deceleration requirement of "NFPA 1901-96, Section 10-1.6" by restraining the SCBA cylinder installed within the retaining bracket assembly. The acceleration at various drop heights are summarized below:

Drop HeightDecelerationTank Weight
6"101 G23 lb
8'154 G23 lb
10"270 G23 lb

SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION:

The Safety restraining strap was affixed to the tank bracket at the top and bottom on the one side while the quick release latch was located at the center of the opposing side.

TEST METHODS AND EOUIPMENT:

The dynamic deceleration testing was conducted by mounting the retaining bracket of the SCBA cylinder bracket beneath the drop fixture. An accelerometer was affixed to the fixture just above the SCBA tank bracket to onitor the deceleration. The fixture was lifted and dropped onto a resilient surface such that the eceleration force acted directly upon the restraining safety strap. The free fall drop was repeated for heights of 6", 8. and 10" while recording the G acceleration force. The 23 lb mass of the SBCA tank provided by the client was sufficient to meet the required test specification.

Instrumentation:

The shock load was monitored with a Wilcoxon Research Model 352 accelerometer mounted to the fixture and a Diagnostic Instruments PL202 Spectrum analyzer. The instrumentation was calibrated with a PCB Vibration Calibrator, Model No. 394C06/ Serial No.1234, due 12-18-99.
